2019 San Diego County Fair Speech Competition is Open

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Exhibitors must register at www.sdfair.com/contests/speech-contest/ by 11:59pm (Pacific Daylight time) on Friday, May 10. 

You will receive an email confirmation. Late entries will not be accepted. 

PROCESSING FEE: $15.00 per student. Fees are non-refundable. 

THEME: “San Diego County Fair, Oz-some!” 

TOPIC CHOICES: Heart, Knowledge, Courage, or Home. There is no restriction to how you use your topic choice in your speech. Have fun with it! 

ELIGIBILITY: San Diego County students, grades K-12 for the 2018-2019 school year. Students may enter as individuals or with a partner in the same age group. 

WHERE: Creative Youth Exhibit Tent, located in Family Funville at the San Diego County Fair. 

DIVISION 5000 Classes 
001: Elementary School (K-5th grades) 
002: Middle/Jr. High School (6th-8th grades) 
003: High School (9th-12th grades)

COMPETITION RULES: 
• Students in Classes 001 and 002 may recite a speech/poem. Students in Class 003 MUST prepare, memorize, and recite their own original work. 
• NEW Maximum time limits: Class 001: 3 minutes; Class 002: 4 minutes; and Class 003: 5 minutes. 
• Any quotations or copyrighted materials used must be identified with the original author’s name. 
• No musical presentations. 
• No props allowed, including cue cards (except for Class 001), or costumes. You will be docked points if props are used, but not disqualified. 
• NEW The competition is limited to 25 students per class registered on a first-received basis. Entries will close when capacity is reached. 

PARTNERS: Each member of the duo must register, pay and enter the name of the partnership when prompted during online entry registration. Only two people allowed per group. In addition you must send the duo name and members’ names to nmerzi@sdfair.com after registration. 

JUDGING: Individuals and duos will compete within each class. Any deviation from the rules will result in loss of points per judges’ discretion. All points from judges will be tabulated at the end of each classes. The decisions of the judges are final. Tiebreakers will be decided, if warranted, to establish First –Third place standings in each class. 

AWARDS: NEW In addition to Donated Awards, the following premiums will be awarded in each class: First Place - $150 Second Place - $100 Third Place - $75 .
