Young Women in Bio - Selfies are out. Self made is in!

The Young Women in Bio Organization and Winward Academy is offering a FREE program for interested students and their families to attend the “Selfies are out. Self Made is in!” Symposium. The goal of the panel is to bring together female leaders in STEM to share their journeys, challenges, life lessons, and advice for high school students. It’s also a great networking opportunity for the students who attend to learn about internships, college pathways, and careers. The event is on Sunday October 27, 2019 from 2:00pm to 4:30pm at the AMN Healthcare Theater. You can view a list of speakers and bios here. Recognizing Students Interested in Computing

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing (AiC) honors 9th-12th grade students who self-identify as women, genderqueer, or non-binary for their computing-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access, and plans for post-secondary education. Since 2007, nearly 14,000 students have received an Award for AiC. 2019 Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) Conference



Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) Conference will take place in San Diego on October 12-16. The annual event features four engaging days of integrative health and medicine education, interprofessional collaboration, self-care, networking, and inspiration. Students in the Biomedical pathway at La Jolla High School will be attending the event on October 15th to get a firsthand look at how doctors in the field continue their learning and how Naturopathic Physicians (ND) and Medical Doctors (MD) interact to improve patient care. Additionally, representatives from AIHM will be talking to the students about various career options in the medical and natural medical fields. 10th Grade Mentoring Experience

The UCSD San Diego Supercomputer Center has partnered with two undergraduate campus organizations, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Women in Computing (WIC), to provide a unique mentoring experience for students in grade 10.


The program's mission is to engage young women in the fields of computer science and engineering through workshops, campus and community events, corporate visits and undergraduate mentor matches. By providing a first-hand look into these two areas of interest and highlighting a variety of career opportunities in an encouraging and supportive environment, it is our hope that these young women continue on to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Students joining the program each year have the opportunity to learn and experience a variety of computer science and engineering focused workshops, events and tours and will have the opportunity to stay involved with ABLE through their high school graduation. Society of Women Engineers DesignLab Event



The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a global non-profit organization founded in 1950. SWENext is a way to become part of the SWE community as a student through the age of 18. SWE will be hosting the local conferences called WE Local for women engineers.

SWENext will be hosting the SWENext DesignLab at WE Local 2020 in San Diego. DesignLab sessions will include role model training, a trip to the WE Local Career Fair, a networking session with women engineers. There are two ways to participate in the DesignLab event - participating in the Community Engagement Challenge and/or applying for the STEM in Action Award!

Community Engagement Challenge asks teams of high school students to create a hands-on engineering activity for younger students that will help resolve a local issue. The teams will present their proposal to a panel of women engineers for a chance to win $1,000 to implement their project and an all expense paid trip to SWE’s annual conference, WE20, in New Orleans, Louisiana. STEM in Action Award
The STEM in Action Award recognizes girls in grades 6-12 who are actively interested in STEM and doing something in their community about it (e.g. raising awareness, mentoring students, participating in SWENext, etc.). NOCTI 2020 Video Contest

NOCTI's 2020 Video Contest theme is Victory in CTE! What does victory look like to you? It’s not difficult to find examples of CTE victories- just look around! Students are encouraged to use their imagination to create a video that creatively, cleverly, and concisely highlights examples of victories in CTE! Eligible videos must be produced during the 2019-20 school year and submitted to NOCTI by January 31, 2020. Better Business Bureau Ambassador and Scholarship Program

This opportunity is to become a peer coach and ambassador for BBB with the added bonus of a scholarship opportunity. The BBB Ambassador Program arms students nearing college and beyond with resources and tools for navigating credit and budgeting, online safety, rentals and housing, student loans and scholarships, and employment scams. Then, students use these skills to educate each other in innovative ways. The program requires students to present to their peers a minimum of three times any time from September 1 through November 29. Three scholarships will be awarded to the students that present to the most number of peers throughout the duration of the programThis scholarship opportunity is open to students in grades 9-12 (graduating classes 2020-2023). The Teen STEAM Cafe Youth Leadership TEAM is a free, fun way for teens to explore current STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) topics and research. Teens recruit scientists to speak at cafe events, participate in discussions and presentations with scientists, and organize, set-up, and run each cafe event. Air Force Scholarships

The Air Force is funding scholarships for AFJROTC cadets to attend private pilot training at public/private universities during the summer of 2020. Application window opens on September 9, 2019. The scholarship will be awarded to highly competitive cadets who are interested in aviation related fields. The scholarship will pay for transportation, room and board, academics, and flight hours required to potentially earn a Private Pilot’s Certificate (PPC). This exciting opportunity will be an in-residence collegiate program, approximately 8 weeks in length. Applicants must be current sophomore, junior, or senior AFJROTC cadets (active or reserve status) who understand they are volunteering for a scholarship to a public/ private university. Cadets must complete an application via WINGS and have parental/legal guardian signed approval.
