UCSD High School Volunteer Summer 2019 Internship Opportunities

For the tenth year, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), at the University of California, San Diego, will offer its volunteer internship program for high school students entitled Research Experience for High School Students (REHS). As part of this program, students will be paired with an SDSC mentor and will work as part of a research team dedicated to a particular area of computational research.

The program has been developed to help increase awareness of computational science and related fields of research to students in the San Diego region. Students gain exposure to career options, hands-on computational experience, work readiness skills, and mentoring by computational research scientists.

Through the eight-week volunteer program, students are involved with an established research project. Students learn how to formulate and test hypotheses, conduct computational experiments and draw conclusions from those experiments. They also learn to take part in regular lab meetings and group discussions. At the end of the program, students will develop scientific posters, reflecting on their summer experience and highlighting their research and future career goals. Posters will be displayed during a celebratory event in mid-August.

For detailed information about the program, please visit http://education.sdsc.edu/studenttech/?page_id=657.

Pro Kids Golf is Recruiting New Students

Pro Kids Golf is a fantastic program for students, especially those in the Hoover or Crawford high school cluster. They operate out of Colina Park Golf course in City Heights. Pro Kids Golf is designed to cultivate kids' aspirations and to Foster their academic, social, and physical development. Life skills through golf!

From the Organization's Website: Golf and Life Skills: Since our founding in 1994, we have used the game of golf to engage kids in positive behaviors during out of school time and to help them develop the character they need to be successful. We couple golf instruction with a curriculum designed by The First Tee that teaches kids life skills – like how to introduce yourself to someone new or what to do when you get angry or frustrated – and core values like respect and honesty. Our team of PGA members and apprentices offer classes after school and on weekends at our par-3, 18-hole Colina Park Golf Course in City Heights. The Academy’s more structured academic program helps kids to 1) achieve grade-level proficiency in reading and math, 2) gain interest in STEM(science, technology, engineering, math) studies, and 3) develop skills like resilience and self-sufficiency – all with golf at the foundation. A typical Academy month includes literacy and math enrichment activities, golf lessons, experiential learning (STEM), field trips, and community service projects.
