Courageous Persuaders Video Contest

John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest

Maximum Amount: $20,000

Application Deadline:  January 4, 2019

Students grades 9 through 12 write an essay about the political courage of a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956. Essays must have source citations. Applicants must register online before sending essays and have a nominating teacher review the essay. The winner and teacher will be invited to the Kennedy Library to accept the award, and the winner's teacher will receive a grant. Essays are judged on content (55 percent) and presentation (45 percent).

Purpose

To encourage students to research and write about politics and John F. Kennedy.

AXA Achievement Scholarship

The AXA Achievementsm Scholarship provides over $1.4 million in scholarships to young people throughout the nation representing all 50 states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico. Students have the opportunity to receive a $2,500, $10,000 or $25,000 scholarship. In addition, for every student who wins a scholarship, a grant in the amount of $1,000 will be made to the winner’s school.

The James Alan Cox Foundation For Student Photojournalists

Type of Awards:
  • Five (5) Digital Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students. (High school applicants should only submit still photographs. The video awards are for college and graduate students only.) 
  • Five (5) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students, payable to their school. Four awards will be for video work while one will be for still photography. 
  • One (1) $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduate student, payable to their school, for video work. 

Focus of work and entries: PHOTOJOURNALISM. (Please see the 2017 or previous years’ scholarship recipients to view examples of winning photographs and videos.) Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work“tells a story”. This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Jim Cox, who was a television photojournalist in Phoenix, always “told a story” through his work, whether it was in video or still photography.


Scholarship applications must be submitted between July 15, 2018 and Midnight, the Evening of November 15th, 2018.


Scholarships will be announced and awarded in early to mid-December.

CHCI's R2L NextGen Program

Are you a high school student who wants to learn about how government works?


Apply now to CHCI’s R2L NextGen program and take advantage of an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

R2L® NextGen is a week-long leadership and civic engagement program for current high school sophomores and juniors. CHCI will bring a group of Latino high school students to D.C. to learn about how the Federal Government works, meet key leaders, visit historic sites and develop a deeper understanding of how they can affect positive change in their communities and their nation.

CHCI is excited to announce that we will be hosting two classes of R2L NextGen participants in 2019. 


The program is completely FREE of charge to all selected student participants.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
January 15, 2019 at 11:59 pm Eastern Time


San Diego County students will participate in the program during the week of July 15-20, 2019.

In order to be eligible to apply, students must:

  • Reside in San Diego County
  • Be a current 10th or 11th grade student
  • Demonstrate interest in learning more about civic engagement

While CHCI does require applicants share their grades and a copy of their transcript, there is no minimum GPA requirement to apply.

All individuals are welcome to apply. However, preference is given to individuals with financial need.

The UCSD San Diego Supercomputer Center is partnering with two undergraduate campus organizations, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Women in Computing (WIC) to provide a unique mentoring experience for students in grades 10-12.

The program’s mission is to engage young women (and men) in the fields of computer science and engineering through workshops, campus and community events, corporate visits and undergraduate mentor matches. By providing a first-hand look into these two areas of interest while highlighting a variety of career opportunities in an encouraging and supportive environment, it is our hope that these young women continue on to pursue careers in STEM fields

Dare to Dream College: the African American Experience for 4th – 12th grade students

San Diego and Imperial Counties Cal-SOAP will host the Dare to Dream College: the African American Experience at UC San Diego on Saturday, November 3rd from 7:30am-1pm. This is a fantastic event for students, parents, teachers and the community to learn about how to better prepare themselves for college. There will be higher education partners as well as a hot breakfast and a variety of workshops. Fleet Readiness Center Apprenticeship Program

Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) located on the Naval Air Station North Island has an Apprenticeship Program that not only PAYS their participants while they are being trained, but also provides them with benefits such as health insurance and career development opportunities. This program offers youths another path to a lucrative career who may not want to obtain a traditional post-secondary degree. FRCSW performs Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services on Navy and Marine Corps aircraft. The command also sends teams of maintenance personnel to apply their talents onboard Navy aircraft carriers and U.S. military bases worldwide. Their Apprenticeship Program is an agreement between the apprentice, the employer, the Union, and the Department of the Navy. This agreement requires a specific number of on-the-job learning (OJL) hours, as well as classroom hours. All apprentices will receive certification from the Department of labor at the end of their training. FRCSW offers 15 trades in the apprenticeship program such as Aircraft Electrician, Sheet Metal Mechanic, Aircraft Painter, Composite Fabricator, Electronics Mechanic, just to name a few. All candidates must be at least 18 years old. Candidates must also have their High School Diploma or an equivalent. Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recognizes students for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills.This year, scholarships of $2,500 will be awarded to over 800 students nationwide.

Applicants must:
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to community service, outstanding qualities in character, integrity and leadership
  • Be enrolled as a high school senior
  • Reside in a community served by Comcast and/or in one of the following NBC or Telemundo markets: Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, El Paso, Los Angeles, McAllen (TX), New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego and Washington, D.C.
  • Plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2019-2020 academic year
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)
  • Demonstrate financial need

Hunt Leadership Scholarship

The Hunt Leadership Scholarship is one of the most generous and prestigious leadership scholarships in the country, and it allows students to combine learning and leadership in a unique way at Southern Methodist University (SMU). We are looking for 20-25 students each year who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in high school, and who will passionately pursue leadership as Mustangs. Hunt Scholars take a leadership development course together during their first semester on campus, study abroad together, enjoy wide access to the Tate Lecture Series, engage with campus, community, and world leaders, and create a lifelong network of leaders by working alongside one another.


Students selected as Hunt Leadership Scholars for the Class of 2023 will receive an annual Hunt Scholarship of $42,000 or a total of $168,000 over four years. The Hunt Scholarship may be stacked up to tuition and fees with need-based aid, outside scholarships, and many of SMU’s departmental scholarship, but it will replace and supersede any centrally administered merit aid. Additionally, the Hunt Scholarship covers full tuition and airfare for a leadership-based study abroad program during May term following the scholars’ sophomore year.


The application deadline is January 15.

Monthly GSA Collaborative Invitation

GSA Collaborative is a monthly event held at rotating locations around SDUSD. The Roosevelt Middle School GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) hosted the first one for the year on Oct. 3. Students converged on Roosevelt from various SDUSD middle and high schools to partake in some fun and impactful team-building and leadership opportunities. GSA Collaborative is held to promote leadership skills and strategies that students can bring back to their site GSAs to help promote and build safe and affirmative school climates. 

The next GSA Collaborative will be hosted by the Lincoln High School GSA from 4:30-6:30 on Nov. 7.

CyberSecurity Workshops for High School Students


Ethical Cyber Hacking” 
In the Ethical Hacking workshop, students will learn how to cover the components of the Cyber Attack Life Cycle (CALC), including reconnaissance / target enumeration, target exploitation, persistence, and trace eradication. Students will be exposed to a small subset of hundreds of commonly-used hacking tools inside Kali Linux, as well as perform ethical hacking against select targets.



The objectives of USD’s Cybersecurity workshops are to teach important cybersecurity principals and inspire a new generation of college bound students into the emerging and critical cyber security field.
