Empowering Young Leaders to Build a Better World

The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards celebrate tikkun olam, or “repairing the world.” The Helen Diller Family Foundation knows that supporting Jewish teen leadership today means creating and inspiring future generations of strong Jewish leaders in the global community. The Awards provide $36,000 for each recipient so that they may use it to further their project or education. Applicants must demonstrate leadership via a specific community service project that is already underway. Examples of past recipients’ work can be found on their website, www.dillerteenawards.org.
Youths ages 13-19 (at the time of nomination) who are:
  • Serving in a leadership role on a project/initiative aimed at repairing the world
  • Self-identify as Jewish
  • Volunteering without any compensation
  • Residents of the United States
Are eligible to apply.
Applicants either self-nominate and apply directly, or are nominated for the award by a teacher, rabbi, counselor or other member of their community who can speak to their leadership skills and the value of their project.

Earn scholarships for a project you’ve already done!

Are you a high school senior with an original research project? Now is the time to open an application to the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious STEM competition for high school students. The online application is open now through November 15, 2017 at 8pm ET. Students who have already completed a research project can absolutely complete this application in one month’s time, so it is not too late to get started!

The Society for Science & the Public and Regeneron are proud to award more than $3.1 million to deserving students and schools again this year, including a top prize for one student of $250,000. Three hundred entrants will be named scholars and will receive $2,000 each, and 40 finalists will be named, awarded $25,000 each, and will be invited for a week long competition in Washington, DC in March of 2018. The Regeneron Science Talent Search has recognized outstanding student research projects and identified young leaders in STEM fields for the past 77 years.

2018 U.S. Army-Pro Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence

The Pro Football Hall of Fame has teamed up with its valued partner the U.S. Army for the past six years to offer the Award for Excellence to high school students around the nation who excel in academics, community service, and athletics.

The Award for Excellence program, open to all sophomores, juniors and seniors, is truly a unique opportunity. In the spring, 25 finalists will be recognized by a Pro Football Hall of Famer and U.S. Army Soldiers during a formal ceremony at his or her school. Then in August, the 25 finalists, along with a guest, will travel to Canton, Ohio for the 2018 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls. The finalists and their guest will enjoy a fun weekend of Enshrinement activities and the Award for Excellence winner will be announced.

Wells Fargo Scholarship Program for People with Disabilities

In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC) has committed $1 million over the next four years to Scholarship America to implement a special scholarship program to help people with disabilities obtain the education or training necessary to succeed in the career path of their choice.

This program is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin.
Eligibility
  • Have an identified disability (defined as someone who has, or considers themselves to have, a long-term or recurring issue that impacts one or more major life activity)
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent
  • Be a high school senior or graduate who plans to enroll or who is already enrolled in full-time or half-time (at least 6 credits per term) undergraduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States for the entire 2018-2019 academic year.
Awards
If selected as a recipient, the student will receive a $2,500 award for full-time study or a $1,250 award for half-time study. Full-time student awards may be renewed for up to three (3) additional years and half-time student awards may be renewed for up to seven (7) years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent.
Awards are for undergraduate study only. 

Only the first 700 applications submitted will be considered for scholarship evaluation.

Do you know a 5th-12th grader who is an exceptional volunteer?


The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is looking for top youth volunteers in the areas of serving those in need, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment, and more!

The awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, is the largest youth-recognition program in the country and is based exclusively on volunteer community service.
The nomination process begins at the school level. Local Honorees are selected at participating schools and organizations in November. From these winners, the top volunteers in each state and Washington, D.C. will be named. Results are announced in February.

Ten National Honorees are then chosen by a panel of prominent public figures, and announced in late April at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Students in grades 5 through 12 are eligible. Applications are due Nov. 7.

Creating STEM Opportunities for Young Children in Southeast San Diego

Great news!  The Fleet Science Center has been awarded a one-year planning grant to design opportunities for young children to engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), in southeast San Diego.  The project called EC[O]STEM is a collaboration between The Fleet, the Elementary Institute of Science and Early Childhood Systems Solutions.

Parents, students, teachers, and the community are invited to participate in the project as a community stakeholder on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 9:00am - Noon at the Elementary Institute of Science.

Learn more about EC[O]STEM and possibilities for STEM in the Diamond District.  Contribute your ideas about what young children and their families need in order to be STEM-strong as they start school.
