San Diego Workforce Partnership invites you to a Career Crawl

Do you have job seekers between the ages of 16-24 who are currently looking for employment? If so, we have an event for you!

We invite you to be part of San Diego’s first ever Career Crawl to North Park. This event is designed to encourage job seekers to explore various career opportunities at businesses in North Park while simultaneously helping the local business community access a diverse talent pool.

When: Thursday June 13th from 11am-2pm Where: Union Cowork 3919 30th St, San Diego, CA 92104 What to bring: Half of the participating businesses are actively looking for talent so please encourage your job seekers to come prepared with at least 5 copies of their resumes.

We hope to utilize this event as a way to share the experiences of small business owners and to encourage local business owners to find out about the benefits of hiring from various populations. This will be a unique job seeker event and we hope your participants can join us!

We will be meeting in the courtyard of Union Cowork to hand out Career Crawl maps and to help answer any additional questions. We will also have our CONNECT2Careers team on-site. If your job seekers are signed up for C2C they can meet their job coach in person!

Building Industry Association of San Diego County 2019 High School Scholarship

BIA Cares of San Diego County is offering scholarships to graduating high school seniors who seek to pursue a career related to the residential and commercial building/development industry. 

ELIGIBILITY 

Scholarships are open to all graduating high school students in San Diego County. The Scholarship Committee is seeking students who can demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the building industry. Many majors play an integral role in the building industry, such as advertising, business, finance, construction management, architecture, engineering, carpentry, city planning, real estate, and interior design, to name a few. 

SELECTION CRITERIA 

The Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to students who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the building industry. Scholarships are also awarded based on other qualifications, including academics, personal achievement, and financial need.

Scholarship Opportunity through County of San Diego Filipino Employees Association

Since 2008, the County of San Diego Filipino American Employees Association (CSDFEA) has given back to the community by way of its scholarship program, which provides a level of financial assistance to students pursuing their educational goals. In 2014, the year before Larry Itliong Day was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, CSDFEA officially renamed the scholarship program to the CSDFEA Larry Itliong Scholarship Award to honor the life and legacy of Filipino American labor leader, Larry Itliong. CSDFEA seeks applicants who, like Larry Itliong, demonstrate leadership and service to the community. This year, awards range from $1,000 to $2,000 and must be applied toward educational costs such as tuition, books, room, and board.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible, the applicant must (previous awardees are not eligible):

1.    Be enrolled in, or admitted to, an accredited college, university, or technical institute/professional school;

2.    Be of Filipino heritage;

3.    Be a San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Imperial, or San Bernardino County resident;

4.    Have a 3.00 or higher weighted GPA; and

5.    Be able to personally accept award at the CSDFEA Gala on Friday, October 25, 2019.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The following must be submitted on or before the submission deadline:

1.    Completed and signed application form.

2.    List of honors and awards demonstrating scholastic and leadership achievement in the past two (2) years only. Include honor / award name and year award was received. Maximum one (1) page.

3.    List of school and extracurricular activities, e.g., student government, music, sports, etc., demonstrating in the in the past two (2) years only. Include activity name, start and end date, and position held. Maximum one (1) page.

4.    List of community service activities in the past two (2) years only. Include name of organization, number of service hours, and description of activity. Maximum one (1) page.

5.    Letter of Recommendation from a teacher / professor, employer, or community leader who can describe your academic achievements, leadership skills, community involvement, and career potential. Letters must be received in 2019.  Maximum of three (3) letters.

6.    Most current copy of your official transcripts from the school registrar, submitted sealed.  

7.    Summary of educational costs for the school year (include tuition, books, school supplies, and room and board).

8.    Maximum two (2) page essay typed and double-spaced in response to the following:

“Define heroism and identify a hero of Filipino/a heritage. Why did you select this individual?”  Essay must be the original work of the student whose name is listed on the application form, and not previously published. Entries found to be plagiarized will be automatically disqualified and student will be prohibited from entering any future CSDFEA competitions.

The Next Gen Institute at the YMCA is a free program for High School Students

The Mission Valley YMCA is offering their 2019 Next Gen Institute summer program for FREE!

The eight week program meets Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm and runs from June 24th to August 16th. Students will learn about digital video and music production, graphic and web design, robotics and other valuable workplace skills such as problem solving, resume writing and teamwork!

Free Summer SAT Preparation Program hosted by Cal SOAP

AWESOME SUMMER OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE YOUR SAT SCORE!!! Cal-SOAP still has spots available in SAT Scholars, a free summer SAT Preparation program. Although the deadline has passed, we will continue to accept applications until the program is full.

SAT Scholars: SAT Scholars is an intensive SAT Prep Academy held at USD (University of San Diego) over the course of 6 Saturdays: June 29-August 10. (No class July 6.) Students must currently be in Grade 9, 10 or 11 (Grade 10, 11 or 12 in Fall 2019) and must have taken Integrated Math III or higher by June 2019. Each session is 8:30am-12:30pm. See attached flier.
