Birch Aquarium Summer Camp


Are you looking for a summer camp for your student?

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps provides Summer Camp with learning adventures for children between 4 and 15 years old, June 24th through August 23rd, 2019.

The accredited camps merge scientific exploration with hands-on fun and learning! Campers investigate marine habitats, create ocean art projects, learn about careers in oceanography, and combine the science and sports of surfing and snorkeling!

Summer camp scholarships are available for families in need of financial support.




San Diego Model Railroad Museum Summer Camp

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum in Balboa Park is offering Summer camps for students entering 2nd grade in the fall through 8th grade! The camps begin June 17th and run through August 2nd.

Participants are invited to explore the multitude of disciplines required to build a model railroad. They will work from a track plan and construct an operational, themed scale model, from track laying, ballasting, scenery construction and circuitry.

Campers will investigate and apply design principles, research unusual railroad cars, and learn why engineers use arches in the construction of railroad bridges.

Students! Do you love AVID and want to share your love at AVID Summer Institute? Student Leaders earn 30 hours of community service plus a free shirt, AVID swag, and lunch each day! AVID began in San Diego so we must have our students represented at Summer Institute!

Summer Institute dates are June 24-26 and July 29-31. You don’t have to attend both sessions to be considered for this wonderful opportunity!

Pre-Apprenticeship Opportunity in the Electrical Training Alliance

Do you want a fantastic career opportunity after high school? 

The electrical training ALLIANCE's goal is to provide the Electrical Construction Industry with the most highly trained and skilled workforce possible. In addition to receiving skill training on the job, each apprentice is provided with trade-related classroom training that produces competency and pride that lead to true craftsmanship. WHAT DO ELECTRICAL WORKERS DO? There are four specialty areas where you will find electrical workers. Outside Linemen- install the distribution and transmission lines that move power from the plant to a factory, a business, or home.

Inside Wiremen-install the power, lighting, controls and other electrical equipment in commercial and industrial buildings.

VDV Installer Technicians-install circuits and equipment for telephones, computer networks, video distribution systems, security and access control systems and other low voltage systems.

Residential Wiremen-specialize in installing all of the electrical systems in single-family and multi-family houses or dwellings.

AMPLIFYing-Student Power Collaborative

The Youth Advocacy Department is hosting the first meeting of our monthly AMPLIFYing Student Power Collaborative. This is a collaborative of student advocates & adult allies where we are focused on fulfilling our students’ needs so that every student in our district can reach their fullest potential. We will provide paths to action, connection, and engagement for students interested in organizing and action-based civics and who want to create educational environments where students are equal partners in decision-making.
Our first meeting will be held at Morse on April 11 at 5pm and encourage all students and teachers interested in any sort of advocacy work to attend. Please contact cbrewer@sandi.net for any questions and RSVP by Thursday, April 10.

Human Trafficking Awareness Community Event!

The Youth Advocacy Team is looking forward to our next Human Trafficking Awareness Community Event. On April 25, 2019, we will be hosting this informational session in conjunction with PCI and SDUSD's PrimeTime staff at Marshall Middle School from 5-7pm. Join the movement to end human trafficking in San Diego.

Learn strategies to recognize trafficking risk factors, understand your role as an advocated to support our youth, and develop internet safety skills to keep youth safe from risks like cyberbullying and online predators.

Community Service Opportunities

Motiv connects San Diego high school students to meaningful volunteer service. Teens are compelled to do service for many different reasons.  No matter their Motiv, by directing teens to high level volunteer experiences, we aim to instill values of lifelong volunteerism. In partnership with great local nonprofit organizations, Motiv will spotlight impactful service opportunities around San Diego County.

Exploring STEM Ocean Careers

Interested in Science? Love the ocean? Come explore exciting careers in oceanographic science! They're more diverse than you might think! 

Meet scientists and professionals from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Birch Aquarium who are involved in a diverse array of careers. Gain valuable resources while learning more about ocean-related STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) professions. Open to students in grades 6-12. Ages 15 and under must be accompanied by a paid adult.

Jeffrey D. Sollender College Scholarship

Recognizing outstanding teens who demonstrate great achievements in the workplace, entrepreneurial ventures, or community service.
Jeff Sollender was a highly accomplished entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist with boundless energy and optimism who was always available to help others in pursuit of their dreams. He was the founder and/or board member of numerous biotech companies and is remembered for his wit, brilliance, creativity and devotion to his family. The Scholarship was established to continue his legacy of helping others to achieve their potential and contribute to the world.

One – two scholarships totalling up to $3,000 will be awarded.

San Diego Promise Program

The San Diego Promise is a two-year completion program for recent high school graduates who enroll full-time (12 units per semester) at San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, or San Diego Miramar College. The program provides up to two years of free tuition to eligible students. Participation in the Promise program comes with a variety of benefits: free tuition for up to two years, an assigned peer mentor/success coach, specialized counseling and guidance support, and additional campus engagement opportunities.

SAT Scholars Test Prep

SAT Scholars is an intensive SAT Prep Academy held at USD (University of San Diego) over the course of 6 Saturdays: June 29-August 10. (No class July 6.) Students must currently be in Grade 9, 10 or 11 (Grade 10, 11 or 12 in Fall 2019) and must have taken Integrated Math III or higher by June 2019. Each session is 8:30am-12:30pm. Unlike SWAG, this program doesn’t include field trips, food, tutoring, etc. It is strictly SAT Preparation instruction. SAT Scholars applications are due April 12; it is a competitive process and acceptance is not guaranteed.

SWAG (Students With Academic Goals) SAT Prep Academy

SWAG is an intensive, 3-week SAT Prep Academy located at Bayview Baptist Church, weekdays June 13-28. Students must currently be in Grade 9, 10 or 11 (in Grade 10, 11 or 12 in Fall 2019.) The program includes SAT Instruction, Tutoring, Lunch, Team-Building and Field Trips to three local universities. Priority Deadline: March 22. it is a competitive process and acceptance is not guaranteed. Families must attend an Orientation in May and students must take a pre-test in June.
